My TikTok "For You Page" knows how much I love beauty, especially hair care. So it's no surprise I get served videos about the latest viral hair products and tools all the time. Over the last few months, videos about the FHI UNbrush Detangling Hair Brush have graced my feed more times than I can count. And truthfully, I scrolled past many of them because no brush can be that good, right? However, with thousands of reviews on the app, I knew I (and a few members of Team Byrdie) had to try the buzzy brush at least. Ahead, learn more about the detangling brush and read our honest thoughts.
The Product
There are many detangling brushes on the market for curly and coily hair types (we've reviewed the nine best brushes here). So, what makes this one so unique? For starters, the UNbrush is designed with a blend of DuoFlex Anti-Static bristles, 105 bristles, to be exact.
Looking closely at the brush, you'll see that the bristles aren't all one length. There are 58 long bristles made for detangling and 47 mini bristles made to smooth the hair, making it optimal for wet and dry hair use. Additionally, unlike many of the most popular brushes on the market, this one has a lightweight handle that makes the hair tool comfortable to hold during the lengthy detangling process.

After a few visits to a curly stylist, I learned how important it is to detangle your hair through the wash day process. Because I recently bleached my type 4 coils blonde, I've been diligent about detangling so I don't cause breakage. As I said, I am a viral product skeptic. However, the UNbrush proved me wrong.
I washed my hair with Verb's Bonding Shampoo ($20), which already has a pretty good slip. But even with the slip, it takes at least five minutes to work my fingers through and detangle. With the UNbrush, it took under three minutes, and the brush glided through my hair like butter. I didn't even have to section my hair.
I skipped using a traditional conditioner because I used K-18's Leave-in Molecular Repair Hair Mask ($29). As I waited for the leave-in to do its thing (you have to wait four minutes before layering products), I raked the UNbrush through my hair in four sections. Again, the brush glided right through from the roots to the ends without tugging, even when there were tiny knots at my ends.
Finally, I used it during my styling process. This is where I struggle because I have difficulty working my products through my roots. This is mainly because getting to my roots requires more detangling and sectioning. I tried the brush with my go-to stylers: Pattern Leave-In Conditioner ($28), The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam ($15), and Innersense I Create Hold ($26). The leave-in has a great slip on its own, so it was easy to fold into my curls. However, the brush made it easier again, cutting my styling time in half.
Next up was the mousse, which also has a nice slip, but my fingers sometimes get tangled in my hair because it can be a little sticky when applied. But the UNbrush smoothed my curls like a wash day superhero, ironing out any lingering knots. Last was the gel, which can also be sticky when applied, causing my fingers to tangle in my hair. But again, this didn't occur with the UNnbrush. Another thing I noticed is the tiny tangles that appear at the ends of my hair throughout the week are much less, which is a major plus. If you're considering purchasing it, add it to your cart because it is a game-changer for coily hair textures.

For the past few months, I've only used my fingers to detangle my hair in the shower. I didn't realize how time-consuming this was until I tried the UNbrush. After shampooing, I apply a deep conditioner (see the best deep conditioners for natural hair here) to my hair and detangle it in sections with the UNbrush. It literally smoothes out all of my tangles in one brush stroke and has cut down detangling into a fraction of the time. My curls are more separated and defined after using the brush, and I have less hair fall-out while detangling.

While I am typically a finger-detangling girl, I was very impressed by the UNbrush. It slid down my hair shaft so easily without tugging or breaking the strands. This brush works well on wet and dry hair, melting away all my knots and tangles. I plan to give my fingers a break and incorporate this tool into my wash day routine.

I always use a detangling brush on wash day, and I've been loyal to the same one for about two years. However, the UNbrush piqued my curiosity, and I was eager to see if it made washing and styling my type 3 curls even easier. Spoiler alert: It did. After I wet my hair in the shower and applied shampoo, I ran the brush through my hair (from my ends to my roots). I repeated this process when I applied conditioner as well. I was immediately impressed by how easily it could work through knots without intensely tugging on my hair or ripping it out. My whole head of hair was detangled in record time using the UNbrush. Usually, I'm left with a sizable chunk of hair in my brush at the end of a wash day. However, with the UNbrush, the amount of hair that comes out is much less. The TikTok reviews weren't exaggerating; this detangling brush is necessary if you have curly or coily hair.
